Modern authors are writing the stories which are surely focused on the modern day youth but they seldom do them justice. They only pick the emotional aspects of love and attraction and bully the desires of youths with their spicy elaboration of the intimate scenes of lovemaking in their fictional world. You know very well who are the authors I am tacitly naming here… As a reader, I have moved on and I seldom find myself comfortable or the least, content, reading these works. I look for something which is different and genuine and refreshing and relevant. And today, I will tell you about the one I have found. John Thomas’ The Big Switch: it’s never too late. This is a novel which compelled me to think while I was reading it and it left a smile on my face when I was done the reading! I will share my experience with you all.
Keith:
The novel is about Keith – the central and the only protagonist in the novel. The plot revolves around him and his dilemmas and the delusions. An employee in a big-time player in the IT sector, Keith finds himself failing and sees his life done and dusted but his material compulsion does not allow him throwing the resignation on the face of his manager called Mathur. He works because he needs money; he does not work because he likes what he does… he fails in love as well. Maya is furious because Keith cannot have time for her and she breaks up with him. (By the way, that’s what the modern love is – was Harold right?) What will he do? What step will he take? What big switch will he make?
Kyra and Maya:
The modern world offers us two things – the good and the bad. Maya is bad for Keith because she does not know how to understand him or cooperate him. Kyra, on the other hand, understands the needs and emotions and the mental turmoils inside Keith. She is a good partner and that’s why her relationship with Keith works.
Is the job good enough?
We often ask this question only with a reference to the salary; if not always, then most of the times we do the same. Is that enough? Are we on the right track? Do we really love what we do the entire day? These are the questions that this novel by John Thomas raises. The Big Switch: it’s never too late is not only Keith’s story; it’s my, yours, hers, theirs his and almost every beginner’s story!
Final verdict:
Saying that this is the best novel I have read will surely be an overrated exaggeration that I won’t be doing. Certainly, nevertheless, this is far better than most of the other novels that I have read by the modern authors and especially way better than those which just serve futility of modern romance! To all those readers who want to read something fresh and vital, The Big Switch: it’s never too late will be highly interesting and compelling. For those corporate workers, the novel will certainly bring new lights.
Storytelling technique used in the novel might be odd at times because John is a first-time writer and I can understand that his focus must have been on delivering his thoughts most of the times rather than the ways to deliver the thoughts. Plotwise and theme-wise, he has done a good experiment which will be suited to most of the reading audience.
