19th Akshauhini algorithm of the Gita Simplified | Review

What could be a day more auspicious than this day – Basant Panchami and Saraswati Puja. On the one hand, we welcome a new season – the king of all the seasons, the spring and on the other, we worship the goddess of wisdom and intellect, Devi Saraswati. I chose this day to write once again about a wonderful book on Gita that I have received from Haribakth, the author of 19th Akshauhini, algorithm of the Gita. On receiving this book, I was very enthusiastic to have a good read, a possible reassessment, a possibly modern or innovative interpretation of the Gita; and yes, I did get all these things! 19th Akshauhini delivers a simple interpretation, a different kind of approach towards the versatile book of philosophic, sociological, theosophical, psychological and scientific treasure – The Holy Gita. Those who have read so many books on Gita and those who have read just the Gita and also those who have read nothing but want to read a day and also those who don’t want to bother about reading the Gita, everyone, I say, will benefit from this book. My belief is not a castle in the air; I believe because I have seen a vividity, a responsive kind of nature in the book. It gives you what you want to take out.

What’s Innovative?

Have you ever read a book on a spiritual topic or theosophical one or religious one which talks about ‘tools and techniques’? I bet you must haven’t, and this is what you get in the book by Haribakth! The author has wonderfully driven the ideas home, the ones he has initiated in his chapter. Haribakth compares the Gita with that a book of the legislature with so many acts. He has presented the argument that an act in the book of the legislature can be or cannot be understood in isolation. At times, we have to refer to other acts in the same book to clarify the ambiguities if there are any… and this idea, I will hold my view again, perfectly sits comfortably. The author then goes on to announce that to him, the Gita is the Divine Constitution! Holy Views!

What’s even more?

There are many things…. beyond what is said in Gita, random things and also tables which clarify the concept of Gita in such a simple manner that a layman who does not know where the alphabet of religious importance and spiritual connotations of Gita start can understand.

Something which might attract the first time readers?

Of course, just go to the last but a very remarkable addition in the book – the sketches by Vaishnavi, the co-author and illustrator of the book as well the daughter of the author Haribakth. Vaishnavi has also tried her best and succeeded in alluding the remarkable things said in Gita. Moreover, she did not only sketch the importance of Gita but also sketched the common misconceptions which people tend to add to Gita. For example, her sketches will show you what has been said in the Gita and in what manner we apprehend those. ‘Gita is only for a particular religion.’ This is a misconception – Gita belongs as much to Mr. Abbas as much it belongs to me, Alok Mishra!

What should you not forget to read?

You should read everything but do remember not to miss the epilogue, the postscript and also the logic of Gita which are the concluding aids of the first part, which is, theoretical part of the book. In those sections, you will have valuable thoughts packed in short paragraphs.
